There are two kinds of differental gear systems: variable and fixed. Variable differentials allows the output ratio of the system to be adjusted by applying a rotation. This is the "standard" differential found in most vehicles. Fixed differentials use a design where a two parts of the device rotate at almost the same speed, the (small) difference causing a unuusally large ratio for the overall system.
